Safety for the holidays.

12/5/2023 (Permalink)

Tree with an ornament. Do not decorate trees with candles.

During the holidays you spend time making memories with your friends and family. Decorating trees, and homes, cooking large feast and baked goods, and sitting by the fireplace on a cold night. Making memories that will last a last time.

Safety tips:

  • Keep your Christmas tree 3 to 10 feet away from a fireplace.
  • Don't throw trash, cards or box in the fireplace.
  • Don't hang garland, stocking or cards too close to the fireplace.
  • Check lights for damaged, or frayed cords and missing bulbs.
  • Don't decorate tree with candles.
  • Make sure candles are on a flat surface.
  • Watering your Christmas tree daily. A dry tree burns faster than one that is water daily.
  • Install, test, change batteries to your fire alarms to make sure they are working.
  • When cooking don't leave area where your cooking unattended. Set timers if you need to check on food.

Outside home Spring Cleaning Tips

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

Maintaining the outside of your home can maintain the value and the beauty of your home. Some measures you take on the outside of your home will protect the inside of your home.

Roof - Use a leaf blower and broom to remove leaves and other debris from valleys and behind chimneys.  Start at the top and blow and sweep downward.  Be sure to wear rubber soled shoes and stay off steep roofs.

Gutter and Downspout Repair -Clean and  repair any leaks in gutters and downspouts.  make sure gutters are securely attached, and replace any loose spikes with gutter screws.

Craw space- Check for standing water if this is an issue installing a sump pump will help. Check vapor barrier for condensation and damage. Opening the craw space vents during warmer weather may help prevent moisture. Replace any old insulation.

Prepare for the storm

9/22/2022 (Permalink)

When weather is concerned expect the unexpected. Tornadoes for example, can be one of the most unexpected events during strong thunder storm. For this very reason tornado warnings are posted for certain time intervals to keep you informed.

Preparing for the storm

Being prepared is one of the best things you can do for your family.

  • Determine your risk- Get familiar with your area by determining the risk or treat from a hurricane. Winds, storm surges, and tornadoes.
  • Develop an evacuation plan-Get familiar with your evacuation zones and alternate routes in case flooded areas and falling trees obstruct the road.
  • Make an emergency disaster kit-Be prepared with a kit that has flashlight and batteries, radio, and enough non-perishable food and water to last a couple of days for each person.
  • Strengthen your home- Cover windows, trim trees, secure loose outdoor items, secure all doors, and move your car to a safe location
  • Check on neighbor-Offering a helping hand with one or more of the above and also checking on them after the storm.

During a storm even now where to go in the structure you are in for safety. Types of Water

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know that some common causes of water damage include flooding caused by severe weather, plumbing leaks, sink, bathtub, or toilet overflow, and sewage backup.  You don't want to spread polluted water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas of your home. Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with the contaminated areas. An important fact in all water damages is the type of water.

Water type

Clean: Water that does not pose substantial harm to humans.  (Examples: Broken water supply lines, water heaters, toilet tanks, tub and sink overflows, rain, snow)

Gray: Examples include discharge from dishwashers, washing machines, Fish tanks, toilet bowls without solid waste, and any water that contains chemicals, fungus or algae.  If left untreated for 48 hours, this can turn into  a Category 3 (Black Water)

Black: Examples include sewage and toilet backflows, river, stream and seawater flooding and sources with toxic pesticides or heavy metals.

There are many excellent resources available for locating information about a particular illness or disease. You can also call your local Health Department for more information.

Should an unwelcome animal enter your home, it is advised that you do not attempt to remove the animal on your own. You could risk illness and injury not only to yourself, but to the animal as well. Contact Animal Control immediately.
